I’ve just upgraded to WordPress 2.7 and I can say although the new design is pretty nice looking, I much prefer the older one. And it seems like just yesterday they rolled out the Happy Cog-designed 2.0. I wonder when they’ll change their underwear again?

Spring is in the air

These past few months have been writing-free while plenty of premium links pile up over on my Tumblr site. But that’s about to change. After all, it’s springtime and there’s quite a bit happening on our end–so why not write about it?

I was anxiously awaiting the release of WordPress 2.5 and after taking less than 10 minutes to upgrade, the collective fraternity of coders and designers at Automattic and Happy Cog didn’t disappoint. After a momentary refresher course of what my plugin installation looked like, I added a few more from Mike D’s list and I’m off and running.

I recently tried to install the Mint BirdFeeder Pepper, and failed despite my best efforts to follow the readme instructions to the T. Unsure what I’m missing, my WordPress feeds aren’t working properly anymore… even after replacing the Pepper-edited versions with fresh copies from the WP 2.1.1 archive. Grrr. Perhaps it’s a WP permalinks issue. That’s for another day.

After upgrading to WordPress 2.1 yesterday afternoon, I thought I’d managed the leap to the newest version of one of the most successful blogging software packages without a single misstep.

Wrong. Not a single link was appearing on my site. Oddly, no MySQL or PHP errors were thrown; the template tags get_links() just weren’t rendering my list items.

Here’s the deal: Running upgrade.php moved all my link categories into the global category table and gave them new primary keys. Of course I didn’t even think about the category ids in my queries (why force this change in the DB without telling us?), but I soon realized what the problem was, and turned back to my templates, swapped out the old link category ids for the new global category ids, and voila!

WordPress 2.1

Yesterday was Widon’t 2.0, today it’s WordPress 2.1. I’ve just completed the 10-minute upgrade procedures without one single headache or hiccup. So far, only a few visual changes to the admin… but lots of modifications behind the scenes.

Now that MediaTemple has sorted out their MySQL issues, and WP 2.1’s now cruising on a faster code-base — overall — my site is performing better.

Life is good.
