These past few months have been writing-free while plenty of premium links pile up over on my Tumblr site. But that’s about to change. After all, it’s springtime and there’s quite a bit happening on our end–so why not write about it?

I was anxiously awaiting the release of WordPress 2.5 and after taking less than 10 minutes to upgrade, the collective fraternity of coders and designers at Automattic and Happy Cog didn’t disappoint. After a momentary refresher course of what my plugin installation looked like, I added a few more from Mike D’s list and I’m off and running.

WordPress 2.1

Yesterday was Widon’t 2.0, today it’s WordPress 2.1. I’ve just completed the 10-minute upgrade procedures without one single headache or hiccup. So far, only a few visual changes to the admin… but lots of modifications behind the scenes.

Now that MediaTemple has sorted out their MySQL issues, and WP 2.1′s now cruising on a faster code-base — overall — my site is performing better.

Life is good.

Hey, I can’t let Apple have all the fun. Drum roll please… My new website is here. I’ve been kicking it around for a few weeks now, and after getting the new design ironed out, the CSS tweaked, and the photographs ready (hat tip: my wife), I wired up my WordPress database… and we’re off!

This version, fourth in the latest collection of WordPress-driven sites, is full of fresh code, content, photos, and — most importantly — me. If you want yours to go, I’ve even worked in a smooth print style sheet (but please print to PDF and save some paper if you’re just testing).

Since I’ve been burning the candle at both ends for the past few weeks, I have a backlog of great posts for my blog I’ll roll out soon. Stay tuned.

Bigger Is Better

The new Joint Regional Intelligence Center (JRIC) in Los Angeles is now open, and it looks like a pretty neat place to work. Hell, Jack Bauer would be proud. And I thought my office was full of fun toys. One of the straight up coolest things I noticed in these pictures from CNET is the newsmap.

Google News was my browser’s start page until I just replaced it with this baby—a visual display of everything coming through the Google News aggregator. Bigger isn’t necessarily better, but in the newsmap’s case, it sure is.

The Simple Upgrade

I received a notification on my WordPress dashboard that the latest version of the publishing tool is now available. I’m told release 2.0.4 contains over fifty bug-fixes and several important security fixes as well. I went ahead and grabbed the latest copy Saturday morning, read over the upgrade instructions, and have to say the process was both very smooth and very fast. After a few quick actions creating archives, backing up my db, and a little Yummy FTP magic, I’m happier than a clam at high tide.

Kudos, WordPress team.

Well, I’ve finally done it. My new website (this). It has been in the works for some time now, and it feels great to finally release it into the wild. Built on pure CSS, XHTML, and the amazing WordPress publishing tool, every last word I write is accessible whether on Mac, Windows or a mobile device—luck you. I’ve even got really pretty printer-friendly pages. Thanks, ALA #144.
