On Air New Zealand’s new 777:

When the so-called “friendly skies” are mentioned, a few airlines in particular come to mind: Virgin America, Singapore Airlines and Qantas, for starters. Starting today, you can safely include Air New Zealand in that discussion. In a bid to turn long-haul international travel on its head, the outfit has today revealed a freshly outfitted Boeing 777 with a coach cabin that easily puts every coach cabin found in the US to shame. Designed by Recaro, the world-class coach area includes 11 rows of Skycouches that can actually fold flat in order to create (admittedly short) beds for two. The best part? The “third seat” in the row will only cost a couple 50 percent of what it normally would, making it somewhat more affordable to buy a bed without springing for first class. You’ll also find power sockets, USB ports and iPod connectors in every single coach seat, leaving the plane a Gogo-module away from being absolutely perfect.

Sauna, jacuzzi, 24/7 hostess, 3 flat screens, Blu-Ray player…… sounds like a hotel suite and half hey? What about the Cold War-era cockpit? Yep, you heard correctly… Cold War-era cockpit! Serving as a restaurant for 15 years following German reunification, this 1960, 120 seater plane, that was once an East German government vehicle serving the likes of Erich Honecker, is now a full-on luxury hotel suite, grounded at Teuge Airport. The clean, modern white interiors and luxury facilities installed by Dutch company Hotelsuites.nl mean that the past can easily be forgotten, however stepping into the untouched cockpit offers a real glint of excitement… if that’s not enough however, parachute jumps or stunt plane rides can also be arranged. In search of something truly unique? This has to be it.

The Bookarc - a Macbook stand - from Twelve South. Awesomeness.

Santa brought me a Bookarc for Christmas this year. The Bookarc is a stand for your Macbook Pro, and I love it. Not only do I have 24 square inches of desk space back, but my notebook actually feels like it’s running faster because it never overheats from lying flat on the table.

Highly recommended, from Twelve South. My setup doesn’t look much different than this product image below.

If only I was the chief public representative of a monarchic nation-state. Ugh. Following up to my earlier post, this is the full-text of the new TSA Security Directive SD-1544-09-06.

U.S. DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY
Transportation Security Administration

Aviation Security Directive

Subject: Security Directive
Number: SD 1544-09-06
Date: December 25, 2009

EXPIRATION: 0200Z on December 30, 2009

Jonathan, writing for Air France447.com:

Jean-Paul Troadec, the head of the the Investigation and Analysis Bureau, said that the search for the Air France flight 447 data recorders will resume in February 2010.

As we all know, the Airbus A330 crashed into the Atlantic Ocean on June 1 on a flight from Rio de Janeiro to Paris. About 1,000 pieces of the plane were recovered and only 51 bodies out of the 228 who were on board. What we don’t know for a fact is why the plane went down. The only way that this question with absolute certainty is if the data recorders are recovered and analyzed.

The search area for this new search will be about 30 miles long.compared to the 90 previous search area. The new search will cost about 10 million euros ($14.2 million) and will be paid by both Air France and Airbus.

It's hard to capture 10 years in 50 images but the ones here do the job: this decade was really shitty.

Alan Taylor on The Big Picture comes through again this time featuring the decade in news photography. It’s hard to capture 10 years in 50 images but the ones here do the job: this decade was really shitty.

Call it what you will, “the noughties”, “the two-thousands” or something else, the first decade of the 21st century (2000-2009) is now over. Looking back on the past ten years through news photographs, it becomes clear that it was a dramatic, often brutal decade. Natural disasters, terrorist attacks and wars were by far the most dominant theme. Ten years ago, Bill Clinton was ending his final term in office, very few had ever heard of Osama bin Laden, the Taliban ruled Afghanistan and Saddam Hussein still ruled Iraq – all that and much more has changed in the intervening time. It’s really an impossible task to sum up ten years in a handful of photographs, but below is my best attempt at a look back at the last decade – feel free to let me know what I missed in the comments below. (50 photos total)

I never minded turbulence, but this is fascinating technology. Boeing’s new 787:

One of the more innovative passenger comfort systems on the 787 is the computer-controlled turbulence-reduction system.

Boeing claims the Smoother Ride Technology will provide an eight-fold reduction in the number of people experiencing motion sickness. Sensors throughout the airplane detect subtle changes in air pressure indicative of turbulence and direct the fly-by-wire flight controls to move flaperons on the wings to counter the vertical motion. It won’t eliminate all the bumps, but Boeing says it will work especially well on the moderate turbulence that causes most airsickness.

Craig Mod:

The GF1 is a near perfect travel camera.

For 16 days I lived with it strapped to me as I climbed through the valleys of central Nepal up to Annapurna Base Camp at 4,200 meters.

I covered the camera in sweat. I hit it against rocks (unintentionally). The air was often dusty and this dust, by the end of the trip, had worked its way into every nook of the GF1. And yet it performed flawlessly. Never once did it stutter or complain or fail to take an image when I asked it to. And only rarely did it take the wrong image.

The compact combination of Panasonic’s GF1 body and the 20mm f1.7 Lumix pancake lens works with you as a traveler. It’s a light, sturdy, capable, exceptionally well conceived photography kit that demands to be taken on adventures.

Mark has been quietly tinkering away with the heater on in the freezing cold garage over a new front door for our house. He very ambitiously ordered an unfinished door, and opted to finish it all himself to save us some cash. He was out there staining and drilling holes and doing who knows what, for about a month! And then yesterday, on my birthday, he hung the new door. I have to confess that when we were first married, every time Mark took on a new project I would inwardly gulp and dread a disaster. But now, my ‘honey-do’ list is very long and I can’t wait for him to start a new project. He is amazing and casually creates the coolest things!

Check out our new front door, letting in lots of nice light (featuring the international supermodel, Holly).

Designer Matt Richmond’s iVictrola merges turn-of-the-century technology with new-millennium gadgetry. The steampunk aesthetic of this new fangled contraption belies the simplicity of the design – place your iPhone in the indented “dock” in the walnut base and turn on some tunes. The sound is carried from a hole in the base, amplified by the metal Magnavox horn to fill the room.

To our delight and amusement, Benjamin is discovering the sensory world of textures with his new found talent of being able to reach for things. Most end up in his mouth, but toys are opening up a whole new exciting world for him and he yells and coos in delight for hours! He especially loves to have things put onto his tummy – that way he can really wrap himself around them and shove one end in his mouth while his fingers and toes explore the rest.

Benjamin is always trying his hardest to sit up. Grunting and loudly complaining if he is anything except for bolt upright. So today I decided to crack open the bumbo and see what he thought of it….He was a little surprised and first, and then spent the next 5 minutes trying to figure out how to get out of it. More grunting and letting his feelings be heard!

I love my lamb!! It’s nose is now well worn in with love – all matted and wet and the beginnings of a bald spot.

I have been playing with a phone app called Polarize that my new sister-in-law Alexis recommended to me, it’s kinda funky and fun!

Good and bad news for flights in and out of Heathrow.

Plans for a third runway at one of the busiest airports in the world has received conditional approval, and could mean an increase of up to 54% in air traffic at the London airport.

The New York Times:

Heathrow, which first opened in 1946 as a tiny airfield supporting about 9,000 commercial flights a year, has expanded steadily over the past six decades to encompass an area of about five square miles, or 13 square kilometers. The airport now serves more than 180 destinations in more than 90 countries. But that figure is down 20 percent from the 227 destinations served in 1990. Heathrow’s two existing runways now run at 99 percent capacity, handling more than 460,000 takeoffs and landings per year, with nearly 67 million passengers annually passing through its five terminals.

Today (two months and three weeks old) was the first day that Benjamin successfully reached for something and managed to grab it. Sure it was a bit of a shaky grab, but it still counts!!! As a side note I think he is going to be a righty as the left hand was not as quick off the blocks.

Looking back over the past year, which I can’t believe is almost coming to a close, we have so much to be incredibly thankful for. For me most of this year was about pregnancy, which I am thankful was a healthy (and long!) one. Mark still has his job and is doing really well at it, definitely something to be hugely thankful for in this economy. We managed to fly my Dad out for a visit a few months ago – I am so grateful that we were able to do this, and we had a really special time with him. I am eternally grateful for my amazing husband. Words can’t express how thankful I am for all that he does for our family. He is an incredible man and every day before I close my eyes, I thank God that I am lucky enough to have this time with Mark in my life. We have a wonderful family, both here in Colorado and in Zimbabwe. They are always so supportive and loving towards us and every year at thanksgiving as we come together, we are reminded just how lucky we are to have a family that is close and that love spending time together. And last but not least, Mark and I have our gorgeous new son Benjamin. We are incredibly thankful that he is here with us, and that he is healthy and strong. He is the light of our lives and every day is an adventure. We are so thankful that we are having this opportunity to experience parenthood, it is such an incredible ride!

November has come and gone so quickly, most of it being spent getting used to our new schedule (or lack there of!) with Benjamin and the chaos we leave in our wake. The night feedings are getting more tolerable, the days are full of giggles and smiles. He is a strong little man, always trying to get somewhere. We are having to buckle him into everything now, and not leave him alone on anything for a second as he inches off things pretty quickly now – I break into a sweat just thinking about when he starts to crawl as I know that Benjamin will never be one to sit still…just like his Dad and Grandy! He has discovered his fists, drools like a champ, and has decided that naps during the daytime are for sissies. His personality is coming out stronger every day, and we are finding a very determined, yet smiley and goodnatured little lad that is always ready to smile and burrow his head into the crook of your neck.

We are learning all about the joys of reflux, gluten intolerance and food allergies. Thank goodness for Mark’s sisters Stephanie and Diana who have been a wealth of knowledge for us. Stephanie has first hand experience with gluten sensitivity, and we are very grateful for her lead in this confusing world of tests, genetics and learning a new way of eating. In spite of all these new challenges for Ben, he is growing at a rate of knots! At two months, he now clocks in at 14 pounds 4 ounces, and is very tall at 24 3/4 inches! He is in the 90+% for all of his measurements which is wonderful! In one old lady’s words “he sure is husky!” And indeed he is.

Hamming it up:

Learning the indignity of bad hats (on a side note, Benjamin is totally going to be that kid who gets his tongue frozen to the lamp post):

Copy Cat:

Bedtime stories:

Nap attack! If Holly knew how close she was lying to Benjamin, she would have had a heart attack:

Since we discovered (with the never-ending support and help from my family) that Benjamin is a gluten-intolerant 2-month-old, this year’s Thanksgiving feast will be gluten-free. It’s a good thing for us my sister Stephanie is a) an amazing cook, b) a publisher of gluten-free recipes, and c) hosting dinner at her place.

It’s not too late to do your grocery shopping — and if you’re looking for gluten-free alternatives, don’t miss her Thanksgiving Guide. The cranberry apple pie is delish!

The LHC is ready to restart after a year of repairs in search of the God Particle.

The Big Picture:

The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) says it expects to restart the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) by this weekend after more than a year of repairs. The 27 km (17 mi) particle accelerator was launched last year, but suffered a failure from a faulty electrical connection, damaging 53 of the smasher’s 9,300 superconducting magnets. Repairs are now completed, and the plan is to begin injecting protons into the LHC this weekend, on the path to search for particles such as predicted-yet-unobserved Higgs Boson. Collected below are some photographs of the repairs, and of the LHC and some of its experiments in various stages of construction. (30 photos total)

After this day, a new and higher baseline for visits to the site is established, and the inference is that this event really established CNN.com and the greater Internet as a reliable, timely and indispensable source for news.

Happy Halloween!

It felt a little silly to dress Benjamin up for Halloween this year as he is so small, however we were given this hand knitted adorable little pumpkin hat and I could not resist getting the poor guy out there for a mini photo shoot in it with Mark’s carved pumpkin. Benjamin looks very unamused, and I am sure this is a photo that will resurface in years to come ie. 21st birthday praps! It turns out there is a very similar photograph of Mark taken with a pumpkin when he was a little older than Benjamin, so I am going to have to dig that out to do a little father-son comparison. Watch this space!

Now the next series of photos are not to be misunderstood! I want to point out that contrary to how it may look, we are NOT getting a lot of sleep at all. In fact, all that these photos show is that he is a darn cute and has a sweet fat tummy that I can’t resist. Enjoy!
