While CMD-clicking a link opens into it into a new tab, there’s more to this modifier key in Safari.

CMD-click a Submit button in web forms to open the resulting page in a new tab – this keeps your painstakingly filled form intact.

CMD-click the Back button to open the previous page in a new tab. CMD-Enter a URI in the address bar to quickly open new tabs with that address, and (my favorite) CMD-Enter a Google search in the window top to open the results in, yes, a new tab.

The standard green “+” circle living at the top left of every window in Mac OS, including iTunes, no longer shrinks the music player into “mini” form. You have to press Option and click the green circle. Or press CMD+SHIFT+M.

Computerworld is reporting that our friends in the UK have been frustrated by the iPhone 3G launch. It would seem that while the iPhone 3G is for sale in Apple Stores, the activation process isn’t working smoothly (sound familiar?). Why is that, you ask? Because O2, that’s the UK wireless company that has the iPhone, uses an activation system that only works with IE. Apple had to install Fusion on the Macs in the UK Apple Stores in order to activate iPhones on the spot, and it seems that the system isn’t working as smoothly as many would like.

I am in the middle of a site redesign, and this is one less thing standing in my way. I like 37signals’ take on MobileMe and IE6: I, too, am hoping this is the beginning of a trend. 

I’ve been looking for something like this to replace Leopard’s default calendar widget on the Dashboard. The newly-released widget is from Ben Kazez and a free download.

I’ve heard nothing but whining from some early iPhone purchasers since yesterday’s announcement. John Gruber, of DaringFireball and an early iPhone adopter himself, said yesterday:

[Apple] set the debut price ridiculously high because demand was ridiculously high. I suspect that for the first few weeks, they were selling iPhones as fast as they could make them.

And for those of you who’ve already bought one and are pissed about the price cut, if you didn’t think the iPhone was worth $599, you shouldn’t have bought it. That’s how supply and demand works.

It seems folks who bought an iPhone back in July have whined loud enough. Apple is giving them each a $100 store credit.

TheStreet.com’s Scott Moritz:

Then, in an unexpected move, Apple killed the 4-gigabit [sic] iPhone and slashed the price of the 8-gigabit [sic] iPhone by $200, to $399. Apple rarely cuts prices on products, preferring to introduce replacements and discontinue previous models.

The move will add more evidence to the speculation that the iPhone, while causing quite a buzz, may not be selling as rapidly as some optimists had expected.

There is no need for speculation. We know exactly how well the iPhone has been selling, because Jobs said so on stage today: they’re on track to sell their millionth iPhone some time this month. That’s a good number. Earlier this week the news hit that the iPhone outsold every other smartphone on the market in July.

My iPhone bill from AT&T was 51 pages long. It listed every single time it automatically checked for new email messages, the amount of data transferred, the exact time of the connection, etc… Only the nerdiest of the nerds would find this information important and necessary. This type of report should only be available online or by the request of the customer. Especially since the argument of “what if they don’t have a computer and Internet access?� is moot with iPhone owners — all of which must own a computer with Internet access just to activate the phone.

Topping the list of highest-grossing locations during the quarter was Apple’s subterranean outlet on Fifth Avenue in New York City, which sold over 5 Macs every hour and 1 iPod ever two minutes on its way to generating a whopping $45 million in revenues. Following in a distant second was Fifth Ave’s neighboring store in downtown SoHo with approximately $23 million.

Five Macs every hour and an iPod every two minutes — in New York City alone! Who said Apple’s market share isn’t growing? Oh right, no one.

Despite some early excitement on my part, the author of the article said it best: if I didn’t already have an iPod in which a lot of time and money has been invested, why switch? It’s too bad Microsoft didn’t make it iTunes-friendly.
