Major news organizations are reporting this morning that Zimbabwean presidential hopeful, Morgan Tsvangirai, leader of the Movement for Democratic Change, has been arrested and is being detained in Lupane, Zimbabwe. The reason for his and 14 of his fellow-MDC party officials’ detainment? Campaigning. And they’ve been told they’re at the police station awaiting a “commanding officer”. Clearly a move to stall any campaigning efforts leading up to the runoff election on June 27, Mugabe and his thugs are pulling out all the stops.
Meanwhile, Zimbabwe’s president Robert Mugabe is in Rome — violating a European Union travel ban — for the UN Food Summit. Aside from collaborating with Iran’s president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, to create a diplomatic nightmare for the Vatican by requesting audiences with the Pope, Italian press spotted Mugabe and his entourage coming out of the five-star Ambasciatori Palace Hotel — one of Rome’s nicest hotels.
My guess is that Mugabe, his wife, and the rest of his coterie are aware this could be their last trip to Europe, and they’re living it up
